The association
Who are we? Our mission
We are a non-profit organization created to host, support and provide comprehensive care for people affected by advanced incurable diseases for which the prognosis is a short lifespan. We promote surroundings specifically designed to meet their requirements.
Where do we come from? Our values
Our human and professional origins are diverse, and we are strong advocates of a multi/transdisciplinary approach. We start from the need to keep the most pressing symptoms under control to ensure the patient’s physical and psychological comfort. We believe that as well as ensuring these essential conditions, it is vital to guarantee other conditions without which end-of-life treatment would be inadequate. These conditions comprise the emotional, spiritual, and social aspects of the patient’s being, as well as his/her autonomy and quality of life. The treatment is not only focused on the patient, but also on his/her family and relations. Taking into account this holistic approach, professionalism, effectiveness and efficiency do not clash but actually complement (while always respecting the person’s dignity) the right to information and to decide—within ethical and legal rights—about the treatment of the illness, manner of parting and post-mortem arrangements. Every step taken must be imbued with solidarity, compassion, tenderness, serenity, availability and authenticity.
Where are we going? Our vision
Epíleg subscribes to the definitions of palliative care of the Catalano-Balear Society of Palliative Care, the Spanish Society of Palliative Care (SECPAL) and the World Health Organization. It also proposes a model of end-of-life accompaniment that complements already existing palliative care methods, using the original hospice model and adapting it to our own temporal, cultural and social environment.
